What are you reading?

This is a book I bought at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. It’s a study about the image. So the title, Devant les Images, means “In front of images.” It explains how unconscious and imagination and reality get with our vision and makes us who we are.

What do you do here in New York?

I moved to New York three years ago to become an artist/photographer.

Can you talk a little bit about your work?

The work I’m doing is very anthropologic, so I’m reading a lot of books about anthropology. I’m mixed-race, my mom is white, my dad is black. I’m studying tradition and mythology–Native American, African, Indian. They all have things in common.

Are you looking at traditional Greek mythology too, as contrast?

Yes. This book called The Passion of the Western Mind actually describes all of the inner influence Greek mythology had on a culture. What’s interesting is that you have to learn about the mythology of Egypt, about Native American mythology, about Mother Nature. For some reason, the new Western mythology creates a bridge among those traditions, when really there is no bridge. There are different traditions, but they are all linked together. I’m doing photography because I want to see tradition, and I don’t see it anywhere.

Where do you live in New York?

I live in Bushwick. I have a living and studio space.

What’s your favorite place to hang out in Bushwick right now?

I like Roberta’s when it’s not the weekend.

What is Roberta’s?

It’s this new place, very popular. It’s a pizza restaurant, but homemade. They grow their own vegetables. It’s kind of like a farm. It’s kind of this new tradition, which is kind of interesting. We all come back to that, but people aren’t aware of it. We aren’t so happy right now because we’re missing nature, and we need to figure out why, and how to come back to that. At least in terms of the story with art.

If you had a life philosophy, what would it be?

I love this expression from Bruce Lee, for some reason. It gets in my mind every day. He said, “Be shapeless, be formless, be water.”
